Chinese New Year Shopping- Nian Huo
What is Nian Huo? Nian Huo, or 年货, aka what you buy ahead of the Chinese New Year. Since the new year is a time of family reunion and sending/receiving baskets of good wishes, Nian Huo is all about good fortune and food that symbolizes good fortune.
Have you filled up your plate yet? If not, better hurry! A full plate of food calls for a fruitful year ahead. The color red is also the KEY component of an expert’s New Year Shopping List
新年快乐,恭喜发财!
Now- what I have on my plate
1. The one and only- Hawthorne
2. Salt Water Taffies from my fave taffy brand- The Salty Road! Shout out to Melissa
3. Sticky rice cakes- Nian Gao (年糕)
4. A specialty from Beijing- Poria pancakes with peach fillings! hmmm
5. Last but not the least- dates, dates and more dates. It sounds the same as “early”, or ASAP in Chinese. And ya know, according to Asian parent, the new year is all about having a big fortune ASAP, having a grandkid ASAP, having straight As ASAP
